renderer = new DisplayObjectRenderer( );
renderer.mouseChildren = true;
addChild( renderer );

And since I created my particles by using createParticles2DFromDisplayObjects and passed it an array of custom display objects, it seems their functionality is preserved in the renderer. Very nice.

emitter.addExistingParticles( particles, true ); ]]>
