Thanks to help from here I got my thrust particles working perfectly, and was really pleased with the result. But then I thought - hey, what would happen if the pixelRenderer was a mask for a picture? So I experimented, and I think the result is beautiful! You get a gorgeous glittery style effect as the ship moves around, pushing the swirling blackness out of the way. I threw in a gravity well to spice it up.

Holy crap! That is such a cool effect!
I noticed that the particle emitter is 'mounted' at the front of the ship. Once the ship gets some momentum and changes to 'strafe' the particles stop coming out of the back of the ship and appear to show off the front. Could you shift the emitter to the back of the ship and then possibly expand the emitter point to an emitter area? I assume you moved it to the front so that it would be 'wide' enough to take up a significant portion of the ship?
Either way, that kicks ass. -

I moved it to the front because it looked like it was pushing the blackness out of the way when you start moving fast. I.e. the glitter was falling away off the sides of the ship. It's actually a disc segment zone, shaped like a pizza slice.
I'll release the source, you can tweak it and see what zone / position would work better :)

Rich, did you ever make this source available? I need something like the thrust effect you've demonstrated (without the masking).
